Unquestionably the most prolific inventor ever to make his home in Highland Park was Elisha Gray, who filed with the U.S. Patent Office the same day as Alexander Graham Bell an apparatus to “transmit the tones of a human voice through a telegraphic circuit,” which would become known as the telephone.
“While Gray was undoubtedly the first to conceive of and disclose the invention, as in his caveat of 14 February, , his failure to take any action amounting to completion until others had demonstrated the utility of the invention deprives him of the right to have it considered,” the Patent Office later determined.
Born in Barnesville, Ohio, Gray studied at Oberlin College, where in he worked out his first great invention — the “self-adjusting relay,” an instrument regulating automatically the motions of the telegraph sounder.
He ultimately received patents for more than 70 additional inventions.
